AI Engineer Salary in India 2026: The Median Is Not the LinkedIn Number

Why ₹21 LPA and ₹80 LPA can both be “AI” — and how to tell which offer you actually have

“AI engineer” became a title inflation problem in 2026. Foundit and other hiring trackers keep saying AI, cloud, and cybersecurity now soak up a majority of specialised tech demand. That is true. It does not mean every JD with “GenAI” in the first line pays like a research lab.

Three jobs wearing one name

  1. Wrapper role. Ship a chatbot or a Copilot feature on top of a vendor API. Useful. Common. Pay looks like a good backend band, not a unicorn band.
  2. Applied ML / MLOps. Eval sets, latency, cost per 1k tokens, rollback, data contracts. This is where Bengaluru GCC mid-levels often sit around ₹28–45 LPA.
  3. Scarce specialist. Models, safety, retrieval quality, or an AI centre that sells internally to a global parent. This is the slice where packages above ₹80 LPA show up in press quotes. It is not the campus median.

A city-wide “AI engineer median” nearer ₹21 LPA can be honest and still useless for your negotiation — because the spread underneath it is violent.

Zinnov’s GCC split is the useful frame

Zinnov’s 2026 GCC read put average increases near 9.8%, then immediately broke the average: AI/ML ~21%, cybersecurity ~20%, cloud ~16%. Over 80% of those centres have already stopped using one hike matrix for everyone.

If your letter says 7% and your work is prompt-pasting into a ticket tool, the letter matches the commoditised side of that split. If you own an eval pipeline that changed a cost or quality number, you are arguing from the other side.

Do not walk into HR with “AI salaries are 21%.” Walk in with one production metric and a competing band for *your* city and years.
