You Think You Know Your Salary. You Probably Don't.

Why 68% of Indian tech professionals are below their market percentile — and don't know it

Most Indian developers know their CTC. Almost none know their percentile.

There is a difference — and that difference is usually worth ₹5–12 lakh.

Here is the uncomfortable truth about India's tech salary market in 2026: two engineers with the same title, the same years of experience, and the same city can be separated by 80% in total compensation. Not because one is dramatically more skilled. Because one knows their market value and the other doesn't.

The numbers are sharper than you think

The Aon Salary Survey 2026 pegs the average tech salary hike in India at 9.1% this year. That sounds reasonable. Until you look underneath.

  • Niche AI, cloud, and security roles are pulling 15–25% increases at competitive employers
  • Commoditised roles — general application dev, manual QA, legacy Java — are getting 6–8%
  • IT services giants TCS and Infosys averaged 4.5–8% for most employees this cycle
  • AI-specialised engineers at product companies negotiated 18–35% in-role hikes

The average is meaningless. What matters is which side of the split you are on — and whether you know it.

Company type is the biggest variable nobody talks about

In 2026, a Senior React Engineer in Bangalore at a funded product startup earns close to ₹45 LPA. The same title at a traditional IT services firm pays ₹22–26 LPA.

That is not a rounding error. That is a hiring strategy — and most engineers at services firms have no idea the gap is that wide.

The three segments and what they actually pay (Senior Software Engineer, 6–8 years, Bangalore):

Company typeFixed CTC rangeVariable / ESOPsIncrement average
IT Services (TCS, Infy, Wipro)₹1828 LPALow5–8%

City still matters — but less than it used to

Remote and hybrid roles are compressing city-based salary differences faster than expected. But the Bangalore premium is still real at senior levels.

Compared to Pune (baseline 1.0×): - Bangalore: 1.15–1.25× - Hyderabad: 1.10× - Mumbai: 1.08× - Delhi NCR: 1.05× - Tier-2 cities: 0.78–0.85× (but gap narrowing with remote roles)

A Senior Android Engineer earning ₹22 LPA in Pune would likely be at ₹2628 LPA doing the same job in Bangalore. That ₹46 LPA difference compounds significantly over a five-year career.

What P25, P50, P75 actually means for you

Most salary discussions happen in terms of "range." The honest conversation happens in percentiles.

If you are at P50 for your role and city — you are earning exactly what the median developer earns. That sounds okay. But it also means half the market earns more than you for the same output.

P75 is the real target. It means you are paid better than 75% of your peers. For most roles, the gap between P50 and P75 is ₹6–10 LPA — enough to change your financial trajectory meaningfully.

Most developers in India are at P40–P55 and think they are doing fine. The only way to know for certain is to benchmark.

The action

Check your percentile before your next appraisal conversation. Not after you get the offer. Before.

Data changes the conversation. "The market pays ₹2832 LPA for this role in Pune" is a different opening than "I feel I deserve more."
