117,000 Open Tech Roles. The Recovery Is Real — and Uneven.

Xpheno’s September 2026 outlook: IT services are back, product is choppy, and experience still wins

After a long muted stretch, India’s tech hiring tape looks less broken. Xpheno’s September outlook put overall tech demand near 117,000 active roles — close to the March 2026 high of 119,000. IT services alone printed about 57,000 openings, the strongest print for that cohort since early 2025.

Tech now accounts for about 51% of India’s tracked active talent demand. That is a headline. It is not a promise that every resume gets a call.

The recovery has a shape

  • IT services: volume is back. A lot of it is still delivery, but digital/AI-tagged roles inside those firms are where the better bands sit.
  • Software products: about 19,000 openings, down 17% month-on-month in the same snapshot. Product is hiring, not flooding.
  • GCCs: August active openings were about 17,000, a 6% dip from July, yet 21% higher YoY. Think “selective expansion,” not freeze.
  • Experience mix: nearly 60% of active demand is mid-senior and senior. Entry-level exists, but employers want job-ready digital skills.

August’s broader Xpheno tech print (109,000 openings, +3% MoM, +6% YoY) already showed the rebound starting in July. September extended it.

What this means if you are switching

A recovery with 60% experienced demand is good news if you have 4–10 years and a scarce stack. It is slower news if you are a generic 2-year full-stack profile competing with AI-assisted juniors.

Zinnov and staffing commentary this season keep naming the same scarce cluster: generative AI, MLOps, cybersecurity, cloud, platform, and data. Limited supply is pushing those salaries 25–30% above comparable generalist tech roles.

The practical switch test for September 2026: can you describe a system you owned, a reliability number you moved, or an AI/cloud/security outcome you shipped? If the answer is only “I closed tickets,” you are applying into the high-volume, low-premium side of the recovery.
